CMPA Create Germany to help expand global opportunities for Canadian music publishers, songwritersSep 18 2017

TORONTO, Sept. 18, 2017—Canadian Music Publishers Association (CMPA) will host two editions of its important CMPA Create initiative in order to strengthen the profile of Canada’s music publishing industry globally. The first edition takes place this week when the CMPA, along with eight Canadian songwriters and 10 music publishers, venture to Berlin and Hamburg ahead of Reeperbahn for CMPA Create Germany (Sept. 18-22). The second edition returns to Los Angeles in November.

Launched in 2016, CMPA Create is a dual-purpose music publishing export initiative that connects Canadian talent with songwriters in international territories and links music publishers with key business contacts in global markets.   “CMPA Create helps strengthen the profile of Canada’s music publishing industry around the world. It is an invaluable initiative that we will look to expand in the future,” says Margaret McGuffin, Executive Director of the Canadian Music Publishers Association.

 CMPA Create Germany participating Canadian songwriters include: Raghav Mathur (Warner Chappell), Corey LeRue (Hyvetown), Milos Angelov (Red Brick), Gillian Godin (aka Jillea) (Slaight Music), Kayleigh O’Connor (CCS Rights Management), Camille Poliquin (Dare to Care Music Publishing), Rueben Bullock (Arts & Crafts), Douglas Romanow (Aporia).

German writers will also participate, including: Sarah Wettrau (Kick the flame publishing), Jonathan Kluth (Four Music), Felix Duczek (Grand H Songs) and Loren Geerts (Schedler Music).

 Participating Music Publishers include: Mark Jowett (Nettwerk),  Jodie Fernyhough (CCS Rights Management), Jordan Howard (CCS Rights Management), Carmel Scurti-Belley (Dare to Care Music Publishing), Gord Dimitrieff (Aporia), Amy Eligh (Arts & Crafts), James Campbell (Slaight Music), Graham Stairs (Pop Guru), and Patrick Zulinov (Hyvetown).

The Canadian music publishers are partnering with their German music publishing colleagues who are members of DMV – Deutscher Musikverlegerverband.   “We are thrilled to partner up with our Canadian colleagues and we are looking forward to holding more camps together on this and the other side of the Atlantic,” says Benjamin Bailer, DMV – Deutscher Musikverlegerverband board member.

The Canadian Music Publishers Association would like to acknowledge the support of the Government of Canada, through the Canada Music Fund and the Canadian Embassy in Germany, YouTube, and the YouTube Space Berlin for their support of CMPA Create Germany.

 The Canadian music publishing industry has recently grown to $282 million.  Music publishers are innovative entrepreneurs and most of the CMPA members are small- or medium-sized businesses.  Export has clearly been a driver of the overall growth in the industry with the study showing that 73 per cent of those revenues are from foreign sources. This represents a complete reversal of the ratio of domestic to foreign sources from what was found in a 2005 study of the industry, in which 28 per cent of revenue was from foreign sources.
