Women in the Studio: Meet the 2019 Cohort
Alexandra Petkovski AKA FJØRA
FJØRA grew up in Toronto, surrounded by the sounds of jazz, world music, classical compositions, and Hollywood film scores. Encouraged by her Macedonian father and Canadian mother to study music at an early age, she was classically trained in piano, then quickly expanded into the world of improvisational jazz. By her teens, she was writing original songs and touring America in a band with her two sisters. By her early 20s, she was scoring films and completing her Masters of Commercial Music in Composition and Arranging at Belmont University in Nashville, TN. A self-taught producer, she has more recently begun connecting and working with Toronto-based studios such as Grayson Matthews and Signal Collective, as well as serves as Musical Director for Meadowvale Secondary School.
Denise De’ion is a Toronto-based singer, songwriter, producer, and dancer. Denise has brought her high energy and feel-good performances to stages across Toronto, performing at some of the city’s most notable venues to date including Dundas Square, Velvet Underground, Adelaide Hall, Revival Bar, Studio Bar, Allstream Centre and internationally in Atlanta, Georgia’s Scene City. Denise completed Canada’s Music Incubator: Artist Entrepreneur (CMIAE) program with a standout graduation performance and positive acclaim. In October 2017, she was one of 5 female producers in Battle of the Beatmakers top 64. In November 2018, she once again competed in Battle of the Beatmakers making it to the top 16. She’s currently working on her project Carpe De’ion to be released in the summer of 2019 with the lead track Fresh To Death featuring Leila Dey and Keysha Fresh (The Sorority) set to be released this spring.
Francesca Nocera AKA Sun Sun
Francesca Nocera aka Sun Sun is a Toronto/Caledon based DJ, producer, member of rap-electro, dub hop group Above Top Secret and Witch Prophet, as well as the Co-Founder of Toronto based collective 88 Days Of Fortune/Heart Lake Records. Her band has opened for and shared the stage with amazing acts like Shabazz Palaces, A Tribe Called Red, Lido Pimienta, JPEG MAFIA and many more, performing at Montreal Jazz Festival, NXNE, Soul Of Brooklyn, Manifesto, Wavelength, Music Gallery, Venus Fest, CMW, Pride Toronto, and more. She is currently working on Witch Prophet’s next album, DNA Activation, and Above Top Secret’s new album, Altro Mondo.
Lisa Patterson is an award-winning musician, songwriter, producer and engineer based in Toronto, Canada where she operates a coach-house recording/songwriting studio. She has co-produced with Michael Phillip Wojewoda (Buffy Sainte-Marie, Amelia Curran) and producer Adam Messinger (Magic!, Iggy Azalea). Passionate about cross-cultural collaborations and advocacy for women and non-binary producers, Patterson founded H.E.R. studio – Heroes of Engineering and Record Production in 2018 to create opportunities and community for said producers. She made history curating and moderating the first Canadian Music Week gender inclusive producer panel in 2018. Currently, Patterson is writing and co-producing tracks for an upcoming release by ‘Canada’s Music Incubator’ prize winner, Pop/Rap artist Esma. Previous artists who’ve been recorded and/or produced at her studio include Melissa Laveaux; Brenda MacIntyre Medicine Song Woman; Calypso Rose and Lido Pimienta.
MYYA is a DJ, producer, and singer-songwriter born and raised in Mississauga, ON. Growing up she showed a huge interest in music, taking up guitar at the age of 7 and writing songs at a young age. MYYA came to be known in Toronto for competing in “Battle of the Beat Makers” 2017 and 2018—a world beat battle held to showcase talent around the world. MYYA took part in “The Remix Project” as a round 14.0 participant in Toronto which has helped develop stars such as Drake, Jessie Reyez, Boi 1da, Wondagurl etc. Her recent singles include “Bounce” Ft. Picasso, “Fall in love” and “Tired of it” Ft. Danyka Nadeau.
