CREATE LA 2024

From February 28 to March 4, 2024, Music Publishers Canada (MPC) travelled to Los Angeles with a group of 20 Canadian publisher members for CREATE LA 2024. The delegation also included three songwriters - Qwinn (Sound of Pop), D R M S (Bloc Notes), and Alexandria Maillot (Women in the Studio 2023) - as well as Gagan Singh (a representative of SOCAN and a member of MPC’s NXTGen Task Force). This was MPC’s first creative trade mission to LA since 2017 and was programmed with an emphasis on film, television, and sync. The delegation featured MPC members from across Canada.

Programming in Los Angeles started with a visit to Apple Music’s Dolby Atmos Studio and then the group met with music tech and PRO representatives.

On Friday, March 1st, MPC hosted Meet the Music Supervisors LA panels at MPC member Monstercat’s LA property. Fourteen LA and UK-based music supervisors discussed their current projects and the kind of music they were looking for and then networked with members of the Canadian delegation. Following the Meet the Music Supervisors event, the group headed to Glendale for a visit to the office of Heavy Hitters Music where they were warmly welcomed by Heavy Hitters team members, including AIMP Atlanta President, Tony Alexander.

On Saturday, MPC was delighted to take part in an exclusive Music in Film event hosted at the Official Residence of the Consul of Canada in Los Angeles. The afternoon panel celebrated Canadian film Queen of My Dreams and the music that was integral to the story. The panel featured the film’s writer/director Fawzia Mirza, composer Alysha Brilla, music supervisor Cody Partridge, as well as music publisher Vince Degiorgio (Cymba Music). The panel was hosted and moderated by Canada’s Consul General in Los Angeles, Zaib Shaikh. The event also featured a musical performance by Women In The Studio 2023 alum, Alexandria Maillot.

On the last day of official MPC programming, the delegation headed to the Guild of Music Supervisor Awards at The Wiltern. Before and after the ceremony, MPC’s members were able to mingle and network with the dozens of music supervisors in attendance at the event.

MPC would like to thank FACTOR and the Government of Canada for their support of the CREATE LA mission. We would also like to thank SOCAN, the City of Toronto, and Compass Rose for their support of the music in film event, as well as MyPart for sponsoring the Opening Night Mixer. Special thanks also to Micheal Eames and Patrick Conseil for helping MPC organize this successful trade mission and for setting up many amazing co-writes for the songwriters who were in LA with us.
